Felly is a British singer-songwriter and record producer. His debut album Fell in Love with the World was released on 10 November 2017, and debuted at number 5 on the UK Albums Chart.
Connecticut rapper Felly started creating music in high school and continued to produce nonstop as his platform expanded, combining beachy guitar, trap beats, jazz-inflected instrumentals, and laid-back lyrics. Felly’s music developed to encompass a broader range of genres and sounds as he progressed from a regular release of songs online beginning in 2011 to the release of numerous mixtapes and EPs. Early releases, such as 2014’s Waking Up to Sirens, gave way to darker, more sophisticated tones on later albums, such as 2017’s Wild Strawberries. Felly’s many varied interests resulted in his first official studio album, Surf Trap, released in 2018.
Felly grew raised in Trumbull, Connecticut, where he was born Christian Robert Felner in 1996. He’s been passionate about music since he was a child, and in high school, he started writing original songs and posted them to YouTube before finding a home on SoundCloud and Bandcamp. In both his appearance and early songs, Felly developed a laid-back persona with references to beach and surf culture. He released a continuous stream of songs in 2011, rapping and performing live instruments as well as producing, which he ultimately collected on Drive-By Music. He also produced a lot of beats and ultimately released beat compilations that he sold online. Felly started singing live, and his fame grew as he sold out concerts all across the country. In 2014, two rap EPs (Waking Up to Sirens and Milk & Sugar) and two instrumental beat tapes were released, for a total of four releases (Black Instruments and Sun God). He started to include tropical and bossa nova elements into his hip-hop compositions around this time, which he twisted into trap rhythms on 2015’s This Shit Comes in Waves. Some of his 2273 Records colleagues, including tourmate and regular collaborator Gyyps, were included on TSCIW. South Linda, his next beat tape, would include beats from these sessions. Young Fel, an eight-track EP by Felly, was released in 2016. He returned to the studio for his follow-up after a national tour. Konshens, Cousin Stizz, and Gyyps all had cameos on the album, which was produced by Dre Moon, Dot Da Genius, and YoG$ and released in the summer of 2017. Felly relocated to Brooklyn in 2018 to begin work on his first fully realized studio album. Surf Trap sought to combine Felly’s beach-cruising production with harder-edged rap production to discover the heart of his varied approaches to sound. The album was set to be released in late autumn 2018, and the first single, “Pretty Girl,” was released in September of that year.
