Estelle Biography, Songs, & Albums |

The Canadian singer and songwriter has been a fixture in the music industry since she released her first single, “Latch,” at age 12. She has won two Grammy Awards and received three Juno Awards.

Estelle is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She first became known in 2006 when she was signed to Atlantic Records as a teenager. Her debut album All of Me was released on September 2, 2009, which peaked at number five on the US Billboard 200 chart.

Shine With the autobiographical hip-hop song “1980,” Estelle inadvertently started her career from London’s renowned Deal Real record shop and earned her first success as a headliner (2004). Estelle described the song as “the beginning of her life,” and it positioned the singer, rapper, and songwriter for stardom and sustained success, culminating in “American Boy,” an international smash hit (number one in the United Kingdom, number nine in the United States) that propelled her second album, Shine (2008), into the Top Ten on both continents. Estelle earned a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for that flirtatious disco-funk throwback song, but subsequent works like All of Me (2012), True Romance (2015), and the current reggae-oriented Lovers Rock have eluded stylistic and one-hit-wonder pigeonholing (2018).

Countryman Estelle Swaray got her start at London’s famous hip-hop record shop Deal Real, where she was exposed to traditional African music, gospel, and rap via family members. Her coworkers pushed her to take a risk and go on stage, and she quickly found herself performing at a variety of local venues and sharing the stage with artists like as Roots Manuva and Rodney P. Skitz, a local superstar, invited her to participate on his Countryman record in 2000, which led to appearances on albums by the 57th Dynasty and Blak Twang. She made her solo debut in 2003 with the Paradise Isle label’s “Excuse Me” 12″, but her breakthrough came in 2004 with the V2 label’s “1980,” which reached number 14 on the UK pop chart. A devoted fanbase was built thanks to a street-level mixtape series called Da Heat and charting songs “Free” and “Go Gone.” V2 released her first album, The 18th Day…, in October 2004. It included three hit songs and reached number 35 on the UK chart. She was named Best Newcomer at the 2004 MOBO Awards.

Despite the fact that The 18th Day… was not released in the United States, one of the album’s contributors, John Legend, helped Estelle get a cross-continental contract with big label Atlantic for her following album. Shine, released in April 2008, was her greatest success, reaching number six in the United Kingdom and entering into the Top 40 in the United States. Its popularity was fueled by the success of “American Boy,” a duet with will.i.am and Kanye West that peaked at number one in the United Kingdom. On its route to a double-platinum certification in the United States, it reached the Top Ten and won a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Following several songs starring Kardinal Offishall, Nas, and Rick Ross, Estelle released her third album, All of Me, in February 2012. It reached the Top 30 in the United States, but it was her last Atlantic record. Estelle created a boutique label via BMG Rights Management and proceeded with the publication of True Romance in February 2015. The inspiring “Conqueror,” which she sang alongside Jussie Smollett in an Empire episode, was the album’s most popular song since “American Boy.” Estelle returned in September 2018 with the modern reggae set Lovers Rock, after the 2017 retro-soul song “Woman’s World.”
