Nevada’s Escape the Fate debuted in 2004 with a punishing mix of metalcore, hard rock, and screamo, and six years later, with the release of their Billboard-charting eponymous third studio album, they achieved widespread recognition. Despite many lineup changes and personal anguish over the years, the band has maintained a devoted fan following and stayed at the forefront of the post-hardcore movement due to hard-hitting efforts such as Ungrateful (2013), I Am Human (2018), and Chemical Warfare (2019). (2024).
Escape the Fate, a Las Vegas post-hardcore band formed in 2004, was known for its aggressive and violent live performance. After their former band disbanded, vocalist Ronnie Radke and bassist Max Green enlisted the help of keyboardist Carson Allen, guitarist Omar Espinoza, and drummer Robert Ortiz. The group gained early popularity through local radio stations and rapidly developed a loyal hometown following despite debuting live just a month after formation.
Escape the Fate has won a local radio contest judged by My Chemical Romance by September 2005. They were given the chance to open for Alkaline Trio and Reggie & the Full Effect on the band’s headlining tour, which led to a record contract with Epitaph. In May 2006, they released their five-song EP There’s No Sympathy for the Dead, followed by their full-length debut, Dying Is Your Latest Fashion, in September of same year. Keyboardist Allen departed the band before to both albums, while guitarist Espinoza left amicably in 2007 after the two releases. The lineup changes continued in 2008, when vocalist Radke was fired due to ongoing drug issues and his participation in an incident that resulted in an assault charge; he subsequently formed Falling in Reverse.
The surviving members recruited former blessthefall singer Craig Mabbitt to replace the empty frontman role, and the new lineup went into the studio in mid-2008 to produce their second album, This War Is Ours, which peaked at number 35 on the Billboard charts in October of that year. The album featured a more streamlined, hard rock approach, as opposed to Escape the Fate’s previous emo-inspired sound. They embarked on a rigorous touring schedule and started production on their third album with producer Don Gilmore (Linkin Park, Bullet for My Valentine) in early 2010. The self-titled album, which was released later that year and was their first for DGC/Interscope, did well financially, debuting at number 25 on the charts.
Before releasing Ungrateful in 2013, they continued to travel extensively, performing concerts all over the globe. With founding member Green leaving and TJ Bell taking over on bass, the band’s ever-shifting roster continues to change. The guitars were handled by brothers Monte and Michael Money, and Ungrateful was moved to a new label, this time Universal imprint Eleven Seven Music, in addition to the lineup changes. Hate Me, Escape the Fate’s fifth studio album, was released in late 2015 and was produced by Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, Bon Jovi, Daughtry) with a lineup that included Mabbitt, Robert Ortiz, TJ Bell, and Kevin “Thrasher” Gruft.
The band’s full-length I Am Human was published in 2018, and it included the songs “Do You Love Me?,” “Empire,” and “Broken Heart,” the latter of which charted in the Top 20 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs list. Escape the Fate returned three years later with Chemical Warfare, which featured violinist Lindsey Stirling and blink-182’s Travis Barker as special guests.
