Capital Inicial is a post-punk/new wave band that had a lot of popularity between 1982 and 1996 after releasing seven albums. Former members of Renato Russo’s groundbreaking post-punk band Aborto Elétrico reunited to create the Capital Inicial, which continues to play similar music. Felipe and Flávio Lemos (drums and bass, respectively) joined guitarist Loro Jones (ex Blitz 64) and singer Dinho Ouro Preto in Braslia, Brazil’s capital, which centers on politicians who leave it on weekends. The city’s chill provided a perfect environment for the fermentation of destitute youth’s anger, resulting in the formation of punk bands. The Capital Inicial followed in the footsteps of Aborto Elétrico, with songs that were comparable to those in their repertoire. Capital (and its sister band, Legio Urbana, which was also formed from the ashes of Aborto Elétrico) first performed in Rio on July 23, 1983, when they opened a Lobo concert at the Circo Voador. Their debut single, “Descendo o Rio Nilo” b/w “Leve Desespero” (Epic), was released in 1984 to generally positive reviews. The film Areias Escaldantes included the latter tune. The Capital Inicial were successful in getting their song “Descendo o Rio Nilo” featured on the collection Os Intocáveis in April 1985. (CBS). The trio released their debut album, Capital Inicial (Polygram), the following year, which included the singles “Psicopata,” “Msica Urbana,” and “Fátima” and sold 200,000 copies. After that, there was a lengthy time of travelling.
Bozzo Barretti, who had performed on the album, rejoined the band in 1987 to record Independência, the band’s second album. It sold half as many copies as the first due to its pop-based sound. The band opened for Sting at the Maracan in November before a sold-out crowd.
The trio released their third album, Você No Precisa Entender, in December 1988, which was fraught with commercialism. Only 50,000 copies of the record were sold. Recognizing that they were losing punk rock followers while gaining pop admirers, they replaced conventional synths with forceful guitars on their fourth album, Todos os Lados (1990). But it was too late to alter course. The record only sold around 30,000 copies, while their fifth album, Eletricidade (1991), only sold about 20,000. This issue led to Barretti and Preto’s departure (to create the band Vertigo) and the hiring of a new singer, Murilo Lima, with whom they produced their sixth album, the independent Rua 47, in 1994. Lima quit the band in 1998 after recording the live album Ao Vivo (Rede Brasil) in 1996. The band continued to have some popularity far into the twenty-first century, producing albums such as Atrás dos Olhos (1998), Rosas e Vinho Tinto (2002), Gigante! (2004), Eu Nunca Disse Adeus (2007), and Das Kapital (2010).
