Enrique Chia is a pianist and recording artist who draws on Cuba’s great pre-revolutionary musical traditions as well as the Great American Songbook and sophisticated pop of his adoptive country to create a distinct and organic playing style. His pianistic hallmark is a calm, passionate intimacy coupled with perfect precision, whether he is performing boleros, sons, descargas, tangos, or pop songs. Since pursuing music as a profession full-time in the 1990s, he has produced over 40 albums that have sold astonishingly well throughout the Americas, the Caribbean, and Mexico, and have served as the foundation for his passionate, always sold-out live performances.
Chia was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba’s south coast, with hundreds of fishing boats flashing sparkling lights in the pre-dawn sky as backdrop. His mother, who played the piano, was his first source of inspiration. Despite the fact that he had been playing the piano from the age of three, it wasn’t until he was five that she saw his potential and encouraged him to study with maestro José Manuel Vázquez of the Havana Conservatory of Music. She also instilled in her son the idea that music should be enjoyed for personal reasons rather than for a livelihood. He fled Cuba in 1961 to attend Georgia Tech in Atlanta, where he obtained a Master’s degree in metallurgy in 1967 and a PhD in 1975, thanks to her support. Chia stayed focused on his work life while playing piano at parties on a regular basis. At 1986, he took a special faculty post at Georgia Tech Research Institute after serving as an adjunct professor in Georgia Tech’s materials engineering department. He went to work for the American Fine Wire Corporation in Selma, Alabama, four years later, eventually rising to the rank of executive vice-president. He left the business in the mid-’90s after registering no fewer than 46 US patents for metals and processing innovations.
Chia recorded and published Unforgettable Piano, a cassette of Cuban dancehall classics from the 1940s and 1950s, at the request of his father-in-law in 1993. Copies were produced and sent about among friends, and the book grew in popularity. They finally made their way into a few tiny record stores in Miami, where they were quickly snatched up. Because to the high demand, Chia and his wife, Diana Beguiristain, decided to start the Begui label, which would house all of his future albums. CDs were produced and sent throughout the Caribbean, South America, Mexico, and even Europe via improvised distribution networks. The demand was so great that Chia started recording anytime he had the opportunity. In addition, he founded a band. Among his more than 40 albums is The Music of Ernesto Lecuona, which was nominated for a Grammy in 2001 (in the classical crossover category). Other tribute CDs he’s made include two volumes devoted to Augustin Lara’s music, as well as one each for Israel “Cachao” Lopez, Armando Manzanero, and bolero kings Los Panchos. In addition to Cuba and the United States, he has produced musical tributes to Tuscany, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. Chia has shot a number of concert DVDs, including the Emmy Award-winning Cuba Eterna, which debuted on PBS in 2008 and has since become an annual favorite. He released several albums each year between 2003 and 2009.
Chia spent his first decade as a traveling professional doing charity performances. He’s been a huge attraction throughout the Americas and the Caribbean since 2010, and he’s released albums on a regular basis, including El Alma de Cuba in 2011, Memorias Musicales de Cuba in 2013, and Piano Under the Stars at Vizcaya in 2018.
