The music of Dead Can Dance has been described as “the sound of the spheres” and is considered one of the best albums in world history.
The dead can dance songs is a band that was formed by Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry in the 1980s. The band has an eclectic style, which incorporates elements of rock, world music, jazz, classical, and electronica.
Dead Can Dance blend elements of European folk music, especially that of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, with ambient pop and worldbeat embellishments, ranging from Gaelic folk to Gregorian chant to avant-garde pop and darkwave. Originating in Australia, the band relocated to London in the early 1980s and signed with 4AD, releasing a string of critically acclaimed albums for the label, including the popular 1991 compilation A Passage in Time, which introduced the project’s distinctive medieval art-pop to the United States, before disbanding in 1998. They reformed for a brief tour in 2005, and then formally re-formed in 2012, releasing Anastasis, their 12th studio album, followed by Dionysus six years later.
Dead Can Dance has seen a lot of lineup changes throughout the years, but two musicians have stayed at the heart of the band: guitarist Brendan Perry and singer Lisa Gerrard. Perry had previously been the main singer and bassist for the Scavengers, an Australian punk band who failed to secure a recording deal. The Marching Girls changed their name to the Marching Girls in 1979, but they were still unable to get a contract. Perry quit the group the next year and started experimenting with electronic music, especially tape loops and rhythms. Perry, Lisa Gerrard, Paul Erikson, and Simon Monroe founded Dead Can Dance in 1981. Perry and Gerrard moved to London in 1982, but Erikson and Monroe chose to remain in Australia.
Dead Can Dance had secured a record contract with 4AD within a year. They released their self-titled first album in the spring of 1984, which included songs they had composed over the preceding four years. By the end of the year, the band had contributed two songs to This Mortal Coil’s first album, It’ll End in Tears, and published an EP called Garden of the Arcane Delights. Spleen and Ideal, Dead Can Dance’s second album, was released in 1985. The album helped them establish a cult following in Europe, reaching number two on the UK indie charts.
Dead Can Dance remained very quiet for the following two years, producing just two new tracks in 1986, both of which featured on the 4AD collection Lonely Is an Eyesore. The group’s third album, Within the Realm of a Dying Sun, was released in 1986. The Serpent’s Egg was published in 1988, and the band also created the music for the Agustin Villaronga film El Nio de la Luna, which starred Lisa Gerrard in her acting debut.
The fifth album of Dead Can Dance, Aion, was released in 1990. The ensemble also visited America for the first time in 1990, receiving acclaim. The ensemble participated in a number of festivals and theatrical performances the following year. A Passage in Time, a collection published by Rykodisc in 1991, was the first American release of Dead Can Dance songs. The trio contributed songs to Sahara Blue and created the score of Baraka in early 1993. They released Into the Labyrinth in the autumn of 1993, which was their first full studio album to be released in the United States. Into the Labyrinth was a cult hit in the United States and Europe. Another American and European tour followed, which was recorded on the album and video Toward the Within, released in 1994. The Mirror Pool, Lisa Gerrard’s first solo album, was released in 1995.
Dead Can Dance released Spiritchaser in the summer of 1996 and went on a worldwide tour to promote it. Gerrard continued to work as a solo artist and produced music for films such as Heat, The Insider, and Gladiator after the pair formally split in 1999. Perry launched a solo career in 2000 with the release of Eye of the Hunter. Dead Can Dance 1981-1998, the band’s first complete box set, was published by Rhino in 2001. Around this period, rumors of a reunion started to circulate; nevertheless, Gerrard’s solo career remained unwavering. Immortal Memory, her collaboration with composer Patrick Cassidy, was released in 2004. Gerrard and Perry made it official a few months later, reuniting for a global tour. In 2005, the band toured North America and Europe, and Rhino published a greatest-hits compilation. In October 2005, Memento: The Very Best of Dead Can Dance was released. In August 2012, the band went on a global tour in celebration of the release of their new studio album, Anastasis. In Concert, a documentary about the tour, was released in 2013. Dionysus, the group’s 13th studio long player, was released in 2018 and was inspired by the rites and rituals of the Greek deity of wine pleasure.
