Daryl Coley was born on October 30, 1955, in Berkeley, California, and is a well-known gospel singer who has also dabbled in jazz and pop. Coley and his brothers grew raised with his mother in Oakland, California, after his parents divorced when he was five years old. His mother adored music and the Lord, and their house was filled with gospel, classical, and jazz music. Coley began to play the piano and woodwinds after being inspired by the music that surrounded him. When the Edwin Hawkins Singers’ modernized gospel sound of “Oh Happy Day” became a big pop success in 1968, Coley became particularly passionate about spiritual music. He started performing with the well-known gospel ensemble Helen Stephens & the Voices of Christ when he was 14 years old. Throughout high school, he continued to include music into his classes, but he stopped performing in order to attend college. Coley studied business but dropped out in 1977 after landing a stable job with the Edwin Hawkins Singers. Coley remained with Hawkins until 1983, when he moved on to James Cleveland as an accompanist. In the mid-’80s, Coley started to stretch out artistically as the musical director for gospel vocalist Tramaine Hawkins. Coley started her career singing in jazz bars, performing with Nancy Wilson and Randy Franklin, giving backup vocals for Stevie Wonder, and touring with disco icon Sylvester. On the popular TV show The Simpsons, Coley supplied the singing voice of Springfield’s greatest jazz musician, Bleeding Gums Murphy. Just Daryl, Coley’s debut solo album, was released in 1986, and it included his jazz-inflected voice mixed with gospel passion and a Christian message. It was the first in a string of CDs that catapulted Coley to fame as a financially successful and critically renowned gospel singer. Coley’s life and career were thrown into disarray in 1991 when he was diagnosed with diabetes; the disease lost him his sight for a while, but he recovered and continued to create music. Coley continued to work in the studio and on stage, as well as collaborate with other musicians, volunteer with an Oakland ministry, and host a gospel radio show called God Said I Can. Coley’s health issues worsened in 2016, and he died in hospice care in the presence of his family on March 15, 2016. He was 60 years old at the time.
