Coley and his brothers grew raised with his mother in Oakland, California, after his parents divorced when he was five years old. His mother adored music and the Lord, and their house was filled with gospel, classical, and jazz music. Coley began to play the piano and woodwinds after being inspired by the music that surrounded him. He started performing with the well-known gospel ensemble Helen Stephens & the Voices of Christ when he was 14 years old. Throughout high school, he continued to include music into his classes, but he stopped performing in order to attend college.
