Drake Geiger, a high school football player, died of heatstroke after collapsing during his team’s first practice session.

On the team’s return to Omaha South High School in Nebraska, Drake Geiger fell on the ground.

The boy’s body temperature reached 122 degrees, according to his father, Scott Hoffman. At the time, the temperature was just over 32 degrees Celsius (approximately 91 degrees Fahrenheit). The heat index, however, hovered between 100 and 106 degrees Fahrenheit, leading the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory for the region.

He was 16 years old at the time.

“He simply didn’t pull through,” Drake’s father, Scott Hoffman, said.

“They claimed his body temperature was dangerously high and they couldn’t bring it down.”

The teen is the fourth high school student to die in less than a month during a sports practice or conditioning session throughout the United States. His father said that the family had just returned from a trip to Las Vegas, where the heat had become intolerable.

Hoffman claimed that his kid was 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighed 389 pounds, but he had no known medical issues and had never been to a hospital.

According to Hoffman, Geiger’s first practice session of the season was Tuesday because his doctor failed to sign the paperwork following his physical, causing him to miss Monday’s session. “The last thing I said to him was, ‘Be tough, kid,’” Hoffman told KETV.

Hoffman, on the other hand, got a call an hour later from the team’s coach, telling him that his son had passed out only minutes into practice.

He was taken to Nebraska Medical Center, where doctors tried for many hours to revive him. “The doctor came in and said, ‘It is not looking good, he is very overheated,’” Hoffman said.

“He didn’t deserve this,” Hoffman added.

“He had his whole life in front of him. “All I want is for this not to happen.”

According to medical authorities, Geiger, who was scheduled to get his driver’s license on Wednesday, had an internal body temperature of about 122 degrees.

Omaha South High School sent a letter to parents on Wednesday announcing Geiger’s death.

“We have been in touch with Drake’s family and expressed our deepest sorrow and support,” stated principal Jodi Pesek.

“This news will have an impact on many people in our community. South High is a close-knit community where everyone looks out for one another.”

Geiger is at least the fourth high school football player to die during practice or conditioning exercises in less than a month, according to the Associated Press. Geiger’s sister, Brittany Hoffman, created an online campaign that has collected more than $15,000 as of Thursday.
