You've Come a Long Way, Baby Fatboy Slim, as Norman Cook, is one of the most successful dance musicians of all time. With his hook-heavy, party-friendly songs (often backed by creative, subversive music videos), he’s scored many worldwide successes and remains one of the world’s most in-demand DJs. Cook helped bring in the mid-’90s big beat trend, which included loud breakbeats and pilfered guitar riffs, among other ear-catching sounds, by building on the sample-based sound of his earlier projects (Beats International, Mighty Dub Katz). His second album, You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby, was a multi-platinum triumph and one of the year’s most highly praised albums, with four British Top Ten singles (headed by “Praise You” and “Right Here, Right Now”). His fame grew with albums like Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars, released in 2000, and mix albums like Live on Brighton Beach, released in 2002. Following the somewhat gloomy Palookaville in 2004, Cook joined the Brighton Port Authority collaboration project and collaborated with David Byrne on the 2010 concept album Here Lies Love. Fatboy continued to release songs irregularly throughout the decade, achieving a big U.K. success with 2013’s “Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat,” while being more active as a DJ than a producer during the EDM boom of the 2010s.

Quentin Leo Cook was born on July 31, 1963, in Bromley, England, and joined the Hull-based pop group the Housemartins in 1986, taking the place of original member Ted Key. Cook got engaged with the growing acid house movement after the group split in 1988, forming Pizzaman with producers Tim Jeffrey and J.C. Reid near the end of the decade. Before Cook split off to record with similarly themed groups Freak Power and Beats International in the early 1990s, the trio had three Top 40 singles together (“Trippin’ on Sunshine,” “Sex on the Streets,” and “Happiness”).

Better Living Through Chemistry In the years that followed, he put most of his previous projects on hold to concentrate on Fatboy Slim’s solo endeavor, which started with a trio of singles and the full-length Better Living Through Chemistry. In 1997, Cook was enlisted to remix Jean-Jacques Perrey’s proto-electronica masterpiece “E.V.A.,” which was released as a 12″ and CD single. Cook also recorded the Skip to My Loops sample CD, a popular studio tool with a variety of sample-ready drum loops, analog squelches, and other sounds, in addition to his FBS work. His remix of Cornershop’s “Brimful of Asha” spent many weeks at the top of the British charts in early 1998.

Fatboy Slim’s second album, You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby, was released later that year. The album was certified platinum in the United States and produced four worldwide singles, including “The Rockafeller Skank” and “Praise You,” which included a Spike Jonze-directed video that received three MTV Video Music Awards and two Grammy nominations. You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby’s songs have appeared on numerous soundtracks and advertisements, solidifying Fatboy Slim’s status as a critically praised and hugely successful artist.

The latter was published in the United States in early 2000 to assist fans wait for his third album, Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars, which was released in the autumn of that year. Hit collaborations with Macy Gray (“Demons”) and Bootsy Collins were featured on the album (“Weapon of Choice,” which had an award-winning video featuring Christopher Walken). In 2002, two mix CDs were released: Live on Brighton Beach and Big Beach Boutique II. Cook and his wife, famous British TV personality Zöe Ball, had a short separation in 2003. They eventually patched things up, but the breakup had a big effect on Palookaville, Fatboy Slim’s most laid-back and melancholy album to date. The Greatest Hits: Why Try Harder was released in 2006 and included all of his hits as well as a few key remixes.
