Geddy Lee of Rush is one of the most influential bassists in hard rock history. Gary Weinrib was born in Toronto on July 29, 1953, to parents who immigrated from Europe. His nickname “Geddy” came from his mother’s attempt to pronounce “Gary” in her accent. Lee joined guitarist Alex Lifeson and drummer John Rutsey to create the hard rocking trio Rush (Lee would also act as the band’s lead singer). Lee began playing bass as a youngster, inspired by the Who’s John Entwistle, Cream’s Jack Bruce, and Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones. Although the band would ultimately achieve fame and riches as a progressive hard rock band, their self-titled 1974 debut demonstrated that they were heavily influenced by blues rock and Led Zeppelin.
However, when Rutsey was replaced by Neal Peart a year later, the band’s sound and musical direction were drastically altered. Long Zeppelin jams were gone, replaced with technically demanding and difficult hard rock, replete with thought-provoking lyrics (courtesy of Peart) — but Lee’s high-pitched, Robert Plant-like scream remained. After a few albums of refining their style, the band struck gold with their 1976 sci-fi concept album, 2112. Each subsequent album (such prog metal classics as A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, and Permanent Waves) outsold the last, and by 1981’s Moving Pictures, Rush had established themselves as one of the world’s most popular rock bands. Despite the fact that Rush’s huge fan base stayed intact during the 1980s, they experimented with more contemporary (almost new wave-ish) sounds, with Lee’s vocals becoming more controlled.
Rush sailed through the 1990s, releasing lucrative albums and doing sold-out stadium tours across the globe (returning to their earlier, organic hard rock style with releases like 1993’s Counterparts), until the band went on permanent sabbatical in 1997. In order to fill the void, Lee released My Favorite Headache in 2000, which included ex-Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron and ex-FM guitarist/violinist Ben Mink. Lee’s impact on rock bass may be heard in the work of such diverse followers as Les Claypool of Primus, John Myung of Dream Theater, and Cliff Burton of Metallica.
