The "Philosophy Of Freedom" CHAPTER 3 THINKING TO KNOW THE WORLD Our last show was about the illusion of duality, and how knowledge gives us true reality by discovering the idea that objectively corresponds to our observation. The tool that enables us to discover ideas is thinking. In this show we examine thinking by means of introspective observation. THINKING 1. We are free to think or not think. If we choose to think, what is the purpose of thinking about an observation? Thinking discovers the concepts that correspond to the observation. 2. What do we gain by thinking? By discovering the concepts that correspond to an event, we can predict what will happen. 3. Is feeling on the same level as thinking? To think and form a concept I must be active and make an effort. With feeling I am passive --as a feeling is something that just happens to me. 4. When a feeling is aroused in me by an event, the feeling is about me, my personality. When thinking is kindled by an event what do I learn? Thinking is not about me. I learn nothing about myself, but instead learn about the event. 5. If you decide to think, how do you do it? When thinking about an object my full attention is turned to the object, I am absorbed in it. I pay no heed to my thought activity, because my attention is on the object I am thinking about. OBSERVATION OF THINKING 1. How do I observe my thinking? The observation of thinking consists of two steps: First create thought, then observe thought. I can never observe the present thinking in which I am actually engaged. Instead, I recall a past thought or earlier thought process to examine. 2. While the observation of objects, and thinking about them, are everyday occurrences that fill my life, why is the observation of thinking a kind of exceptional state? The exceptional state is to apply the same attentive observation to thinking that we use

CHAPTER 2 THE DESIRE FOR KNOWLEDGE In our last show we discussed the illusion of freedom, and how knowledge gives us true freedom when we know why we act. In this show we discuss the illusion of duality, and how knowledge gives us true reality by discovering the idea that objectively corresponds to our observation. The desire to know is a basic need. As a child we felt the inner harmony of the universe in our heart. We felt ourselves to be one with the world. But we lacked the clarity of that unity that thinking gives. The illusion of duality occurs when we grow up enough to have thoughts. Then the mental process splits reality into two parts: the outer perceived world and our inner thought world. By having our own thoughts we lose our childhood unity and become independent of the world, confronting it as an individual. Dissatisfied with this separation, we spend our life striving to regain the lost unity of our childhood. DUALITY 1. What is the fundamental cause of the illusion of Duality? Reality appears as a duality because of the split between the perceived-world and our thought-world. 2. How do we overcome duality? Knowledge overcomes duality by transforming the world-content into our thought-content. 3. The religious believer seeks knowledge in the revelations granted by God. What is a barrier to overcoming Duality for the Religious? Blind faith in the revelations of religion leads to a dogma of revelation, then knowledge cannot be gained, only faith in some one or some thing. 4. The artist seeks to mold his ideas into his material to reconcile the separation. What is a barrier to overcoming Duality for the Artist? The artist uses feeling and sensitivity to create, but without thinking the artist may not be aware of the ideas that drive him. 5. The scientist seeks the laws of phenomena by thinking about his observations. What is a barrier to overcoming D

Rudolf Steiner: The Invention Of God And Religion

The existence of a divine world order is a creation of the human mind, but this fact is not clear to the human being. He does not recognize that the content of this spiritual world order has sprung from his own mind. He invents gods in his own image and lets the world be ruled by them. The truth is that he projects his inner nature into the outer world, and then subordinates himself to this, his own creation. One finds countless people who believe they are governed by gods. Yet, there are no believers who do not independently and over the heads of the gods, judge what pleases or displeases, these gods. It would not be acceptable for a religious person to set himself up as the lord of the world. But this does not stop him from determining, out of his own absolute power, the likes and dislikes of the god who rules the world. "We will not live by your commandments, we are free." Moses: "There is no freedom without the law." "Whose law Moses, yours? Did you carve those tablets to become a prince over us?" Moses: "Who is on the Lords side, let him come to me." One need only look at the character of the religious, and one will find my assertions confirmed. Is there anyone who proclaims the existence of god and does not, at the same time determine in quite exact detail what pleases god and what god finds repugnant? Every religion has its wise teachings about the cosmos, and each religion also claims that its wisdom comes from one or more gods. If one wants to characterize the standpoint of the religious person one must say: He seeks to judge the world out of himself, but he lacks the courage to take responsibility for this judgment. So he invents spiritual beings outside himself that he can saddle with this responsibility. Such considerations seem to me to answer the question: What is religion? The content of religion springs from the

Principles Of Individualism: Truth

There are two well known paths to truth, seeking truth in outer life, and seeking truth within. Empiricism gains knowledge by observing the outer world, and Reason gains knowledge by thinking the inner world of concepts. Reason raises knowledge from the sense perceptible level to the conceptual level. The inner path of Reason is more suited to our present age of individualism. Today, if I am to be convinced of something, I must recognize it to be true in my own inner life. A truth that comes from the outside will always bring skepticism. Only inner truth can give the individual the power of conviction. Ones talents are weakened when tormented by doubts. If baffled by a world of riddles, an individual can find no direction for his creative action. It is no longer enough to merely believe; we want to know. Faith demands the acceptance of truths that we do not fully understand. The only knowledge that satisfies does not submit to an external norm, but springs from the inner life as insight. We do not want a knowledge bound in academic rules and preserved in reference books valid for all time. As individuals, we have a right to start from our own personal experience, and from there advance to knowledge of the whole universe. We strive after certainty in knowledge, but each in his own way. Facts of knowledge should not be crammed into students, rather, the students capacities should be developed so understanding arises from within. We do not expect agreement or acceptance from anyone who is not moved to a certain view by his own insight. I know there is a widespread tendency to flaunt a life style that strives for status and lacks any individuality. But I also know that many try to conduct their life in the direction described here.
