Can't Hold Back Ice Cream Tee, not to be confused with Ice-T or Ice Cube, was an obscure female rapper from the 1980s Philadelphia rap scene. The MC grew up in Philadelphia, where she met DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince before they were famous. Ice Cream was heavily featured on “Guys Ain’t Nothing But Trouble,” the follow-up to their smash “Girls Ain’t Nothing But Trouble,” released in 1987. Ice Cream went solo soon after, and by the late 1980s, she was being managed by Lady B, a DJ and ex-rapper best known for her show on Philadelphia’s urban contemporary station Power 99 FM, and who had recorded the single “To the Beat, Y’all” for Tec Records in 1979, which was later reissued by Sugarhill. In fact, Lady B was the first female rapper to release a solo album. When Ice Cream released her debut solo album, Can’t Hold Back, for Strong City in 1989, she was handled by Lady B. Can’t Hold Back was a rougher, harder, more aggressive attempt in the vein of MC Lyte, Roxanne Shanté, and Queen Latifah, in contrast to the lighter pop leanings of “Guys Ain’t Nothing But Trouble.” Can’t Hold Back was not a huge hit in the United States, and Ice Cream never released another album.
